Balancing screen time with quality family interactions is a constant challenge for many households. In today’s digital age, children use their devices for various purposes, blurring the boundaries of what constitutes a reasonable amount of screen time.

To address this issue, a campaign called The Family Chat, in collaboration with Tesco Mobile, has been launched for 2026. This initiative aims to prompt families to have open discussions about online safety at home. Author and podcaster Giovanna Fletcher is engaging with parents and children to explore the challenges they encounter, their coping strategies, and how Tesco Mobile’s online safety tools can be beneficial.

One valuable resource offered is a downloadable family pledge, enabling families to establish basic agreements on healthy screen time practices and ensuring children’s online safety. Giovanna emphasizes the importance of regularly evaluating the situation, sharing that her family’s approach includes not allowing phone time to become the sole activity, especially for younger children.

The Karley family, comprising Anna, Emmanuel, and their three teenagers, relies on phones for communication, school tasks, and managing their busy schedules. Seeking a positive approach to discussing screen time, they participated in the Team Mum v Team Dad Online Safety Challenge. Divided into two teams, they undertook challenges focusing on comparing screen-related activities with offline pursuits, leading to a commitment to the family pledge.

Moving forward, Anna and Emmanuel plan to leverage Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub for expert guidance on maintaining a healthy balance between digital engagement and in-person connections. They have already implemented a phones-down rule at 9.30 pm to enhance family bonding activities like quizzes.

In addition to these efforts, it is crucial to be cautious of certain online content red flags, such as sensational headlines, suspicious websites, and stories lacking credibility. Parents are advised to teach their children how to verify social media accounts and engage in fact-checking activities together to promote digital literacy and safety.
