Keir Starmer has issued a stern message to Donald Trump, asserting that the UK will not be swayed by his threats of imposing tariffs due to disagreement over his Greenland plans.

During a session of PMQs, Starmer criticized Trump’s tactics of pressuring Nato allies who oppose his intentions for Greenland, labeling it as “completely inappropriate.” He emphasized Britain’s unwavering commitment to its principles and values regarding the future of Greenland, despite the tariff threats.

In a notable rebuke of the US President, Starmer also accused Trump of making contradictory statements about the Chagos Islands deal, insinuating that Trump was deliberately trying to pressure the UK and himself regarding their stance on Greenland.

Trump has warned of imposing 10% tariffs on Britain and other European allies starting February 1 if they do not support his bid to acquire Greenland, with a further increase to 25% for Nato allies by June.

In a surprising turn of events, Trump criticized the Chagos Islands deal, previously supported by him, linking it to the Greenland issue. He referred to the deal as an “act of GREAT STUPIDITY.”

Starmer, addressing fellow MPs, highlighted Trump’s shift in tone towards the Chagos Islands deal, suggesting it was a tactic to pressure the UK and himself regarding their positions on Greenland. Starmer reaffirmed his refusal to yield to such pressure, expressing surprise at the Opposition Leader’s stance.

During the same parliamentary session, Kemi Badenoch, a prominent Tory figure, accused Starmer of lacking the strength to defend the UK’s national interests. In response, Starmer emphasized his efforts in working with Nato allies to safeguard national security and maintain unity within the alliance, asserting the significance of solidarity in such critical matters. He criticized Badenoch for inconsistency in her views on Greenland, highlighting her lack of judgment.
