The Met Office has forecast an escalation in geomagnetic activity following the expected arrival of an Earth-directed coronal mass ejection (CME) on Tuesday. A CME, characterized by a substantial discharge of plasma and magnetic fields from the Sun’s corona, has the potential to induce geomagnetic storms when directed towards Earth. These storms can lead to phenomena such as auroras, disruptions to satellites, and possible challenges for power grids.
According to the Met Office’s alert issued on Monday, there is a high probability of a significant G3 category storm occurring, with a chance of a severe G4 storm. Geomagnetic storms are classified on a scale ranging from G1 (minor) to G5 (extreme), reflecting their intensity and the potential technological implications on Earth. Severe storms have the capacity to impact spacecraft, causing issues such as surface charging and tracking problems, as well as potentially affecting the orientation of low Earth orbit satellites, which may require adjustments.
During these events, radio frequencies and GPS satellite navigation could experience degradation for extended periods. Additionally, striking auroras may be visible across the entire UK. The Met Office emphasized the expected rise in geomagnetic activity as a result of the incoming CME, underscoring the importance of preparedness for potential impacts.
