A tragic train collision in Spain has resulted in the loss of at least 39 lives and left 170 individuals injured, with concerns that the death toll may increase. The incident occurred when a high-speed train derailed in Adamuz, Andalusia, late on Sunday, veering onto an adjacent track and colliding with another train also causing it to derail. Reports indicate that approximately 300 passengers were on one train, while the other carried around 186 individuals.
Emergency services have confirmed the deaths of 39 people, with 170 others injured, including 15 in critical condition, with four of them being children. The rescue efforts are ongoing at the crash site with over 220 Civil Guard officers participating in the operations.
Authorities are working diligently to identify the victims, opening three offices in Huelva, Malaga, and Madrid for families to submit reports and provide DNA samples to assist in the identification process. First responders described chaotic scenes upon arrival at the crash site, with numerous bodies scattered, screams filling the air, and mobile phones of the deceased continuously ringing.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and pledged full transparency in determining the cause of the crash. He announced three days of national mourning starting from midnight until Thursday. So far, 48 injured individuals have been discharged from the hospital, while 43 remain hospitalized, including 12 in intensive care.
The operator of the first train involved, Iryo, disclosed that the train was carrying around 300 passengers, and the second train operated by Renfe bore the brunt of the impact. The Spanish transport ministry indicated that the collision occurred within seconds, with both trains traveling at high speeds.
Efforts to rescue survivors trapped in the wreckage are ongoing, with specialized teams assisting in the recovery process. The death toll is expected to rise, prompting calls for blood donations to meet the anticipated medical needs.
