In Jalisco, Mexico, the infamous figure known as El Mencho met his demise during an operation conducted by the Mexican army, resulting in his death and that of at least six alleged associates. Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, aged 59, had ascended from poverty to lead the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), a criminal organization that swiftly surpassed its competitors in ruthlessness, financial power, and access to advanced weaponry.

The CJNG not only engaged in Mexico’s drug conflicts but also revolutionized them with a strategic and ruthless approach. Despite El Mencho’s demise, the aftermath saw a resurgence of violence with highways blocked by burning vehicles in multiple states. Masked assailants disrupted traffic, set vehicles on fire, engaged security forces in combat, and swiftly retreated to their hidden strongholds, causing widespread chaos and fear beyond cartel-controlled areas.

Following security incidents in Jalisco, including Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta, British tourists in Mexico have been advised to exercise extreme caution, stay indoors, and avoid non-essential travel. The Foreign Office cautioned about the ongoing security issues and advised travelers to heed local authorities’ instructions to ensure safety.

The tranquility of holiday resorts in Mexico has been disrupted by violence and road closures, prompting Air Canada to suspend flights to the region. This sudden clash with criminal activities serves as a stark reminder of the longstanding turmoil that has plagued Mexico for years.

The reign of El Mencho and his cartel, CJNG, echoes the era of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, another notorious drug lord. The intricate escape of El Chapo from prison in 2015 exemplified the deep-rooted corruption and power dynamics within Mexico’s criminal underworld. The relentless pursuit of these kingpins has revealed the grim realities of a conflict that transcends borders and defies conventional law enforcement tactics.

While El Mencho’s demise may seem like a significant blow to organized crime, the underlying issues of corruption, violence, and deep-seated criminal networks persist. Despite the arrests and takedowns of key figures, the pervasive influence of drug cartels and their illicit operations continue to pose a threat to Mexico and beyond.
