A recent survey by mobile provider Three UK reveals that the traditional tea break is fading away as over a third of Brits now rarely step away from their desks during the workday. Interestingly, half of the respondents admit that the only reason they leave their workspace is to use the restroom. Despite these habits being prevalent, many individuals believe that not taking breaks adversely affects mental health, with 76% acknowledging the positive impact of breaks on workplace well-being.
To address this issue and support Brew Monday, Three is advocating for a ‘Tea Leave’ initiative, urging employers to adopt a policy encouraging employees to take a 30-minute break without any questions asked. Brew Monday, an annual campaign by Three’s charity partner Samaritans, aims to counter the notion of ‘Blue Monday’ by promoting social interactions over a cup of tea, either in person or over the phone.
Dr. Alex George, a mental health advocate, emphasizes the importance of stepping away from work to support mental well-being. Research indicates that 70% of British office workers believe simple tea or coffee breaks outside can lead to meaningful conversations with colleagues, crucial for mental well-being at work. These interactions are considered more beneficial than dedicated well-being spaces or team-building activities.
During breaks, 44% of individuals plan to spend more time outdoors, while others use the time to respond to messages from loved ones or make video calls. Samaritans stresses the significance of human connection, dismissing the concept of ‘Blue Monday’ and emphasizing the impact of small gestures like Three’s ‘Tea Leave’ initiative.
Nicki Lyons, chief corporate affairs and sustainability officer at VodafoneThree, underlines the importance of supporting positive workplace well-being during challenging times, aligning with Samaritans and Brew Monday’s mission. Three, having raised over £1 million for Samaritans, is offering its Three+ members a special perk this week, allowing them to enjoy discounted hot drinks at various cafes and coffee shops across the UK.
