After a series of fast-paced days at the Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games, the initial phase of competition is coming to a close. The intensity was particularly high at the Corner Brook Civic Centre, where ball hockey contenders from various regions in the province vied for top honors on Tuesday.
In the gold medal match, Team Mount Pearl South emerged victorious over Team Avalon with a tight 4-3 scoreline. Thirteen-year-old Raine Foss of Paradise clinched the winning goal and expressed his satisfaction in seizing the moment. Reflecting on his contribution, Raine mentioned, “I passed it back to the [defence], saw the lane, came through and I buried. It’s great to come and represent MPS. It’s great; this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
Raine’s teammate, Reid Swain, shared his excitement at departing Corner Brook with a gold medal. He remarked, “We worked at it for the past couple of months, and we really didn’t think we were going to pull it off. But we did, and it feels great.”
While Team Avalon’s Ryan Walsh didn’t secure the medal color he aimed for, he cherished the enjoyable moments he experienced in Corner Brook. He mentioned, “It was great, like, staying in school with all the b’ys, and all the other stuff that we did. It was all fun.”
Team Central claimed the bronze medal, a source of pride for 14-year-old Jack Stone from Grand Falls-Windsor. Stone expressed his elation, stating, “It’s like, ecstatic, you know? You come into a tournament not knowing how you’re going to do. To come out with a medal feels good.”
