Canada and the United States are in the process of finalizing a trade deal that is set to involve the reduction of tariff rates by U.S. President Donald Trump on Canadian products. In return, there is an agreement for American alcohol products to be reintroduced in provincial stores in Canada, alongside other potential concessions. Prime Minister Mark Carney briefed provincial leaders on the broad outlines of the agreement, emphasizing its potential to assist sectors impacted by tariffs, although criticism is expected due to the tariffs not being completely eliminated.

Although specific details of the agreement have not been disclosed, a source familiar with the upcoming deal revealed that U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum are expected to be reduced from 50% to 25%. Discussions are ongoing regarding derivatives and exemptions. Furthermore, the agreement is anticipated to lower Trump’s tariff rate on Canadian-produced cars and trucks from 25% to 15%.

The integrated nature of the North American auto market means that vehicles assembled in Canada often contain over 50% U.S.-made components. Consequently, if the tariff is only applied to the non-U.S. portion, the effective rate could decrease by up to half, as mentioned by the source.

After the meeting, Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe commended Carney for his efforts in negotiating what he termed a “top-notch trade agreement” with the U.S., asserting that it could provide Canada with unparalleled market access. Moe acknowledged the shift in the trading relationship with the U.S. under Trump’s protectionist policies.

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston expressed optimism following the briefing, highlighting the positive aspects for Canada, including the preservation of the supply management system and advantageous defense procurement provisions in the deal. Houston noted that progress was being made in the right direction.

Carney and his team have been working towards a deal that addresses lingering trade issues and offers tangible benefits for Canadian businesses, workers, farmers, and families. The negotiations aim to secure a beneficial outcome for Canada amidst the challenges posed by Trump’s tariffs.

The business community has welcomed the pause in tariffs by Trump and urged swift action to reach a comprehensive agreement. Candace Laing, CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, emphasized the need for certainty through a signed interim deal to provide stability for businesses during uncertain times.
