President Donald Trump has reiterated his belief that if the United States does not take control of Greenland, it risks potential invasion by either Russia or China. Speaking at a gathering with oil companies interested in participating in the exploitation of Venezuelan resources, Trump asserted his determination to acquire Greenland by any means necessary, stating he would pursue the territory either through peaceful negotiations or by force. When questioned about a potential offer to purchase Greenland from Denmark, Trump avoided discussing financial matters at the moment.

Emphasizing the strategic importance of Greenland, Trump stated, “We will take action regarding Greenland, regardless of their approval, as we cannot afford to allow Russia or China to establish a presence there. Ideally, we prefer a diplomatic resolution, but if necessary, we will resort to more forceful measures.”

Regarding potential support from the UK for any US military intervention in Greenland, Defense Secretary John Healey clarified during a visit to Kyiv that British facilities or personnel would not be used in such operations without a solid legal foundation. He stressed the importance of NATO alliances, highlighting the UK’s commitment to act in accordance with legal and strategic considerations.

The escalating tensions surrounding Greenland have prompted Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen to caution against any US military actions on the island, warning of potential consequences for the NATO alliance. European leaders, including Sir Keir Starmer, have emphasized the need for Greenland’s future to be determined by Greenland and Denmark alone. Sir Keir engaged in a discussion with President Trump on this matter, leading to diplomatic discussions aimed at addressing concerns over potential Russian threats in the Arctic region.
