In recent times, Iran has witnessed a surge of protests as individuals have taken to the streets to voice their opposition against the authoritarian regime in power.

Subsequent to these demonstrations, the Iranian government has responded harshly to the protesters, leading to reports from human rights organizations suggesting that more than 2,400 individuals might have lost their lives during the crackdown.

The exact figures have proven challenging to ascertain due to the government’s shutdown of the internet, hindering protesters’ ability to communicate and share information effectively.

Despite these challenges, there is optimism both domestically and internationally that the current rule of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei could soon come to an end, potentially paving the way for democracy to flourish in the nation.

Discussing the ongoing revolution with The Times is comedian and actor Omid Djalili, who has long been an advocate for the Iranian population living under oppressive governance. Of Iranian descent himself, Omid shared a poignant account of learning about the tragic death of his friend’s brother at the hands of Iran’s security forces.

Recounting the incident, Omid revealed that the regime demanded a payment of $5,000 (£3,700) to release the deceased’s body and coerced the family to sign a misleading petition. He highlighted the disturbing tactics employed by the authorities in manipulating the situation.

Furthermore, Omid mentioned varying estimates of the death toll, ranging from a minimum of 2,000 to a maximum of 12,000 individuals according to Iran International’s comprehensive research. He emphasized the brutality witnessed, including a distressing video of young protesters being shot by security forces while returning home.

This is not the first time Omid has spoken out about the turmoil in Iran and the regime’s atrocities. During an interview with Andrew Marr on LBC, he condemned the extreme measures taken by the authorities, labeling it as a distorted interpretation of Islam that the majority of Muslims reject. Omid recounted heart-wrenching stories of families being extorted for payment after the loss of their loved ones at the hands of the regime.

The situation in Iran continues to draw international concern, with calls for justice and a shift towards a more democratic governance structure gaining momentum.
