A well-known hotel and dining establishment abruptly closed its doors after operating for 46 years, causing distress among its patrons.

Guys Thatched Hamlet, situated near Bilsborrow in Lancashire just off the A6, has officially ceased operations. The hotel, which comprised 65 rooms and stood adjacent to the canal on St Michael’s Road, has let go of all its employees.

An announcement posted at the hotel entrance confirmed the closure. The extensive site, spanning nearly 14 acres, featured a pub, eatery, sports pavilion, event spaces, a cricket field, bowling green, and three parking lots.

According to the Lancashire Post, a notice at the location stated: “After 46 years of service, we regret to inform you that Guy’s Thatched Hamlet is now closed. This decision was not taken lightly and we express our gratitude to our loyal customers, staff, and suppliers for their support over the years.

“The hamlet held special significance for many, and as it transitions, our focus is on concluding this chapter.”

Upset customers expressed their sadness on social media platforms. One recalled a memorable proposal at the venue in 2012, while another lamented an engagement in 2015, echoing the sentiment of many who frequented the place.

The Wilkinson family has overseen the business since 1980 and put it up for sale last year, disclosing an approximate net turnover of £4.2 million but without specifying a guide price.

The property listing highlighted the hotel’s strategic location near the Lake District, Fylde Coast, and the Trough of Bowland, with 65 ensuite guest rooms attracting both leisure and commercial clientele.

Situated conveniently off the A6 near Bilsborrow village and alongside the Lancaster Canal, the hotel enjoyed easy access to the M6 and M55 motorways, making it a desirable destination for patrons from the surrounding areas.

Having undergone extensive renovations and expansions over the years, Guy’s Thatched Hamlet had carved a niche for itself in the North West of England, boasting a stable year-round business with peak seasons during Summer and festive periods.
