Laila Cunningham, the new candidate for London Mayor from the Reform party, is facing scrutiny as co-owner of a controversial hotel known for its poor conditions. Guests at the £50-a-night New Dawn Hotel have reported issues such as mold, bed bugs, and theft incidents.

Despite Cunningham’s anti-crime campaign platform, concerns have been raised about the safety of the hotel, with one female guest advising against staying there, especially for women. The property, owned by Plaza Continental Hotels Ltd, lists Cunningham as a 5% shareholder under her previous name, Laila Dupuy.

Reviews of the hotel have been overwhelmingly negative, with guests highlighting cleanliness issues, safety concerns, and even incidents of theft. Some guests have resorted to unconventional methods like using a hairdryer cable to secure their room due to faulty locks.

The hotel’s website touts a commitment to guest comfort, but reviews tell a different story, with complaints ranging from unpleasant odors to encounters with undesirable individuals. Westminster City Council has received complaints about the hotel’s condition, prompting an inspection visit in 2024.

In response to the criticisms, Cunningham distanced herself from the hotel’s management, stating that she has no active role in its operations. A spokesperson for Reform UK dismissed the negative reviews as isolated incidents and denied any wrongdoing on Cunningham’s part.
