A recent report by consumer advocate Which? reveals that some of the major broadband providers in the UK are failing to meet customer expectations for reliable service. The study shows that smaller alternative networks, known as “alt-nets,” are surpassing the larger brands by offering faster speeds, more dependable connections, and better value.

The research indicates that issues with internet connections, such as frequent dropouts, are widespread among consumers. Slow download speeds and service outages are also common sources of frustration for users, with a significant 91% of broadband customers experiencing problems with their service in the past year.

Among the prominent providers, Sky has been noted for frequent dropouts, reported by 38% of customers, although these were promptly resolved. Virgin Media also faced criticism, with 30% of users encountering regular connection dropouts despite paying premium rates for their broadband service. Additionally, a quarter of Virgin customers expressed dissatisfaction with slow download speeds.

Sky users expressed dissatisfaction with the speed of their broadband service, with nearly one in three customers feeling that it was inadequate. Other major providers like TalkTalk and Sky’s NOW service also received negative feedback from customers.

On the positive side, smaller UK providers like Zen Internet, Community Fibre, and Hyperoptic have been commended for their reliable services, outperforming many major brands. Plusnet, among the larger providers, stood out for its performance compared to rivals such as Vodafone, EE, BT, and Sky.

This report aligns with previous findings from Which? indicating that smaller broadband companies consistently excel in reliability, customer service, and value for money compared to larger providers in the UK.

Which? advises households to check for alternative providers in their area and consider switching if they are dissatisfied with their current service. The Ofcom broadband checker is recommended as a tool for exploring available network options.

In response to the report, a Virgin Media spokesperson emphasized ongoing investments to improve services and highlighted positive rankings in various categories by independent sources. They noted that Virgin Media has been recognized for offering top-notch broadband services in the UK.

Overall, consumers are encouraged to take advantage of competitive deals and have the power to switch providers for better broadband experiences.
