Piché, a resident of Burlington, Ont., has actively avoided purchasing American products since the U.S. imposed tariffs on Canada in early 2025. In her household, the priority is given to Canadian goods, followed by non-U.S. products, with a strict avoidance of American items whenever possible.

In response to the recent escalation of trade tensions and the introduction of new 50 per cent U.S. tariffs, Piché has reinforced her stance by further eliminating American purchases. She has already switched to Canadian personal care brands, terminated her Amazon membership, and scrapped plans for a trip to New York. Moving forward, she intends to discontinue American streaming services and forego certain gluten-free U.S.-made foods, even if alternatives are scarce.

The resurgence of the Buy Canadian movement, fueled by renewed trade threats, has prompted consumers to shift even more towards Canadian products. Platforms like the Made in Canada Facebook group have experienced a significant increase in engagement, with discussions now focusing on sourcing Canadian alternatives for various products.

Technology tools like the O SCANada app, developed by Ryan Checora, are also witnessing heightened interest. The app, which provides information on a product’s country of origin, has seen a recent surge in downloads, indicating a growing appetite for supporting Canadian businesses.

While some consumers prioritize price over the origin of products, others like Lauren Hung in Vancouver are still driven by cost considerations, especially when it comes to grocery shopping. However, Canadian brands such as Peace by Chocolate have seen a boost in support, with increased web traffic and interest in their Canadian-themed products.

Tareq Hadhad, the founder of Peace by Chocolate, acknowledges the spike in support for Canadian brands amid the trade tensions. He has halted shipments to the U.S. and emphasizes the importance of backing Canadian businesses during these challenging times.

The evolving landscape of consumer behavior underscores a shift towards consciously supporting Canadian products and businesses, demonstrating a growing sense of national pride and solidarity in the face of trade uncertainties.
