U.S. President Donald Trump declared on social media Wednesday his intention to execute what he termed as “the MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY!” on Iran. Describing it as Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented level, Trump provided limited specifics.

He issued a caution regarding the economic repercussions for any nation that backed Tehran or extended any form of support to Iran. Trump emphasized that any country permitting its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to aid Iran would face significant economic consequences.

While not outlining precise actions Washington would take against such countries, Trump emphasized the urgent need to halt activities like oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, and front companies. He concluded with a direct message, stating, “It all needs to stop NOW. You know who you are.”

In the ongoing conflict that has seen thousands of casualties over six months and involved multiple Gulf nations, Iran’s control over shipping in the Strait of Hormuz has rattled global markets. The strait, responsible for nearly one-fifth of the world’s traded oil before February, faced disruptions due to the conflict.

Despite ceasefire agreements announced by the U.S. and Iran in both April and June to restore shipping flows through Hormuz, these agreements quickly collapsed. Concurrently, Israel, which had joined forces with the U.S. at the conflict’s onset in February, largely retreated from the fighting.

Trump’s social media declarations and threats do not always materialize as stated or are effectively implemented.

On Tuesday, the United Arab Emirates, hosting a significant U.S. military base, declared the suspension of all trade activities, commercial exchanges, and financial transactions with Iran indefinitely. This decision followed the UAE defense ministry’s claim of detecting two missiles launched from Iran that landed in the sea, a report dismissed by Iran as unfounded.

China, a major importer of Iran’s oil, faces potential economic repercussions if the U.S. intensifies its economic actions against Iran, given China’s status as a crucial exporter to the U.S., including essential rare-earth minerals.

Iran’s adviser to the supreme leader, Mohammad Mokhber, expressed Iran’s willingness to engage in dialogue with the U.S. while maintaining a stance against surrendering under military pressure and sanctions. Despite Trump’s statement that no talks were ongoing with Iran, Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and special envoy, indicated that negotiations with Iran were still in progress and possibly more active than ever.
