WhatsApp is gearing up to address a major concern by introducing a new feature, prompting users to take action promptly to stay current. Currently, the main communication method on the platform involves sharing phone numbers, which is not always convenient.
After a long wait, the Meta-owned app is finally addressing this issue by rolling out unique usernames. This update will allow users to share their usernames instead of divulging their phone numbers.
According to WhatsApp, sharing a phone number can be a significant step when connecting with new people like classmates, neighbors, event acquaintances, or group members. The app highlighted that sometimes users may prefer to chat without disclosing their phone numbers, which led to the introduction of this new feature.
Moreover, this update will enhance privacy in group chats. For instance, individuals joining community or social group conversations will now have the option to participate without immediately exposing their phone numbers to strangers.
WhatsApp has advised users to start reserving their preferred usernames in advance of the full launch. Due to the platform’s massive user base, popular usernames may be taken quickly, so early reservations will increase users’ chances of securing their desired usernames without missing out.
To reserve a username, users must update WhatsApp to the latest version and navigate to:
Settings > Account > Username
The rollout of this feature will occur gradually in the upcoming months, with WhatsApp notifying users when usernames become available in their respective regions.
