A significant transition in phone communication is on the horizon for millions in the UK, requiring homeowners to take action before an impending deadline. The traditional copper landlines that have long facilitated connectivity are being phased out in favor of a new technology known as Digital Voice, which leverages broadband for calls.
This upgrade not only aligns with modern requirements but also enhances reliability and introduces new functionalities like improved call clarity, call forwarding to mobile devices, and enhanced call screening to combat scams and unwanted marketing calls.
Scheduled to be fully implemented by January 2027, this overhaul has prompted BT to launch an awareness campaign led by Clare Balding. The initiative, titled ‘Don’t Put Off the Switch,’ urges households to assess their landlines and ensure readiness for the digital era.
Coinciding with recent research revealing a tendency among Brits to procrastinate essential tasks, the campaign emphasizes the importance of responding promptly when contacted by service providers to avoid disruptions to vital services.
Assurances have been given that consumers are likely to retain their phone numbers, and costs are expected to remain stable during the transition. In most cases, no technician visits will be necessary, as households can simply connect their existing phones to their broadband hub instead of the traditional wall socket.
However, some exceptions may arise, and in such instances, reaching out to the service provider for assistance may be required to resolve any issues promptly.
According to Lucy Baker, Consumer Digital Voice Director at BT, overlooking messages from service providers can potentially disrupt critical connections. Emphasizing the significance of the shift to digital landlines, Baker highlights the need for proactive engagement to benefit from enhanced technology and sustained connectivity.
BT has also underscored the importance for customers with specific needs, such as users of telecare devices or pendant alarms, to inform their provider promptly for tailored support.
Digital Voice, BT’s latest home phone service, operates through broadband technology, offering advanced features like Multi Call, three-way conference calling, and call diversion to mobile numbers. The service promises improved call quality and eliminates issues like crackling conversations, requiring a compatible Digital Home phone for optimal performance.
For most households, transitioning to Digital Voice should not disrupt their phone usage habits, as the service and broadband costs are bundled into a single package without any additional charges for Digital Voice services.
