Giovanna and Tom Fletcher have decided to get their 11-year-old son a phone as he starts secondary school in September. They understand the importance of communication and safety in managing their son’s access to the digital world. Concerned about the risks of inappropriate content and mental health issues, Giovanna emphasizes the need for parents to engage in conversations with their children to empower them.

As many families navigate the challenges and benefits of children receiving smartphones as Christmas gifts, a campaign called The Family Chat, in partnership with Tesco Mobile, aims to promote open discussions about online device usage among families. The campaign highlights resources like Tesco Mobile’s age-specific toolkits to support parents and children in managing online activities.

Giovanna, along with her husband Tom, who is the frontman of McFly and a children’s author, have two younger sons who use tablets to message family members and play games online. The couple ensures that the devices are used for communication purposes and have set restrictions to prevent excessive use or access to inappropriate content. They believe in maintaining an open dialogue with their children to explain the rules and reasons behind them.

Acknowledging the importance of limiting screen time for both kids and adults, Giovanna stresses the need for boundaries, such as no phones in the bedroom or at the dinner table. She advocates for a gradual introduction of internet access for children, based on their readiness and understanding of responsible usage.

To help children stay safe online, here are some tips:
1. Set up a child account to manage parental controls effectively.
2. Ensure the correct age is entered on the child’s account for appropriate safety settings.
3. Activate safety filters on search engines to block inappropriate content.
4. Utilize parental controls provided in the Little Digital Helps Toolkit tailored by age group.
5. Maintain ongoing conversations about online activities and smartphone usage to stay informed and address any concerns.

Dr. Rebecca Whittington, Reach’s online safety editor, emphasizes the importance of prioritizing a safe setup for new devices to protect children from online harm, especially during the initial phase of device usage that may involve overuse and impulsive behavior.
