Roy Keane made a pointed remark about the spouse of Manchester United’s new interim head coach, Michael Carrick, as he discussed Carrick’s return to Old Trafford. Carrick was appointed as United’s manager until the end of the season after Ruben Amorim was dismissed earlier this month.

Having previously overseen three games in 2021 before moving to Middlesbrough in the Championship, Carrick rejoined the team this week after positive talks with the club’s leadership.

During a discussion on the Stick to Football podcast, Keane appeared to reopen a past dispute with Carrick’s wife, Lisa, while assessing the team’s prospects for the season. Keane suggested that Carrick’s wife might step in if Carrick’s performance falls short, alluding to her outspoken nature potentially influencing team talks.

In 2014, Lisa had responded to Keane’s criticism of Carrick’s performance and post-match interview following a defeat to Olympiacos in the Champions League. Although she initially posted a critical tweet directed at Keane, she later deleted it and apologized for her emotional reaction.

Keane also expressed criticism towards Carrick’s coaching staff members, questioning the appointments of Steve Holland, Jonny Evans, Jonathan Woodgate, and Travis Binnion to the management team. Keane highlighted Evans’ recent role as a loans manager before his sudden promotion to the first-team coaching staff, emphasizing his concerns about the coaching setup.

Additionally, Keane emphasized the importance of quality training sessions led by experienced coaches like Holland. He raised doubts about the coaching abilities of Woodgate, Evans, and Carrick, underscoring the significance of having a strong coaching staff for the team’s success.
