Rachel Reeves emphasized that challenging Keir Starmer for the Labour leadership would be ill-advised. During the World Economic Forum in Davos, concerns were raised by Bloomberg TV about the potential impact of a more left-leaning Prime Minister and Chancellor. In response, the Chancellor reassured that there was no need for concern, citing Starmer’s overwhelming support within the Labour Party and Cabinet. Reeves expressed confidence in Starmer’s ability to continue as Prime Minister and herself as Chancellor.

Reeves’ remarks at the Davos summit coincided with upcoming challenging elections for Labour in England, Scotland, and Wales. Prior to last year’s Budget, tensions rose within the government regarding Starmer’s position amidst fears of a leadership challenge following the elections. Starmer affirmed his commitment to leading Labour into the next election, dispelling speculation about his future.

Addressing Nigel Farage’s presence at the Davos summit, Reeves criticized him as “very bad news” for the economy but remained unfazed by his influence. She highlighted the government’s economic plan, focusing on improving the cost of living, attracting investment, and reducing inflation and interest rates. Reeves dismissed concerns about Farage’s impact, emphasizing the efficacy of the government’s strategy.

Reports indicated that Reeves engaged in discussions with Housing Secretary Steve Reed regarding Labour’s pledge to cap ground rents for leaseholders in England and Wales. Former Deputy PM Angela Rayner urged the government to honor its manifesto commitment to end the issue of unaffordable ground rents faced by leaseholders. Rayner emphasized the importance of meaningful action in leasehold reform to protect families from financial burdens and restore faith in the government’s ability to effect positive change.
