Kevin Pietersen has sparked a renewed conflict with his former teammate Alastair Cook, following Cook’s criticism of England cricketer Jacob Bethell’s decision to stay in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Bethell, who shone in England’s defeat to Australia in the Ashes series, has not seen much action with Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL despite playing six matches.
Cook advised the 22-year-old Bethell to return to England and play for Warwickshire in the County Championship instead of staying idle in the IPL. England is set to kick off a series against New Zealand shortly after the IPL final, where RCB has a good chance of making it.
In contrast, Pietersen, who was dropped from the England team in 2014 during Cook’s captaincy, disagreed with Cook’s stance. Pietersen emphasized that Cook lacks understanding of the IPL environment and the exposure to top-level players it offers. Pietersen encouraged Bethell to continue his stint in India, stating that despite not playing, he is learning valuable lessons that will enhance his skills.
Pietersen also expressed that if English county cricket was as strong as it was in the past, he would support Bethell’s return, but believes that Bethell’s development in India benefits English cricket more in the long run.
The rift between Pietersen and Cook dates back to Pietersen’s exclusion from the England team and their disagreements over team decisions. Bethell, on the other hand, shared his conviction that staying in India is the right path for his development, despite having limited game time in the previous IPL season.
