Sabastian Sawe made history by setting a new world record in the marathon at the London Marathon, finishing in 1:59:30. The Kenyan surpassed the previous record of 2:00:35 held by Kelvin Kiptum and secured his second consecutive victory in the race.

This achievement marked a significant improvement from last year’s time of 2:02:27. The intense competition in the elite men’s race came down to a close battle between Sawe and Yomif Kejelcha from Ethiopia.

Sawe managed to break away from Kejelcha in the final stretch of the race, solidifying his place in the record books. Kejelcha also finished in under two hours, securing second place in a tightly contested race.

The exceptional performance by Sawe left former Olympic silver medallist Steve Cram at a loss for words, praising the historic moment. Sawe’s feat was described as unbelievable and unprecedented, leaving spectators in awe.

Paula Radcliffe expressed astonishment at Sawe’s accomplishment, believing it would have a profound impact globally. Sawe, confident in his abilities, affirmed his readiness to break the record before the race.

Reflecting on his victory, Sawe expressed his excitement upon seeing the final time and credited the enthusiastic crowd for their support. He emphasized that the achievement was not his alone but a collective effort with the people of London.

In the women’s elite race, Tigst Assefa defended her title by finishing first for the second consecutive year with a time of 2:15:41, breaking the women’s London Marathon record. Hellen Obiri and Joyciline Jepkosgei, both from Kenya, secured second and third place, respectively.

In the wheelchair races, Marcel Hug of Switzerland clinched his sixth consecutive victory in the men’s competition, matching the record set by David Weir. Catherine Debrunner, also from Switzerland, successfully retained her title in the women’s wheelchair race.
