After being misdiagnosed with IBS and a UTI, a mother discovered she actually had advanced cancer.
Andrea Morton, a 35-year-old from Manchester, sought medical help multiple times for severe abdominal pain and weight loss. Initially diagnosed with IBS and a UTI, her condition deteriorated over time.
Following a visit to the A&E, a CT scan revealed a blockage in her bowel, leading to emergency surgery. Subsequent biopsy results shocked Andrea with a stage four bowel cancer diagnosis at just 31 years old.
Facing the news, Andrea opted for immediate chemotherapy over fertility preservation to boost her chances of survival. She described the decision as tough but necessary for her well-being.
Completing three months of chemotherapy with various side effects, Andrea received a clean bill of health in December 2021. Despite some post-operation challenges, she remains positive about her future.
Now actively working with Bowel Cancer UK, Andrea aims to raise awareness about early cancer detection and share her journey of battling the disease at a young age.
Highlighting the importance of timely diagnosis, Bowel Cancer UK stresses the need to avoid emergency cancer revelations in A&E settings, advocating for proactive measures to save lives.
