Lidl Plans to Enter Mobile Phone Market with Budget Plans
Lidl is gearing up to enter the mobile phone market with affordable plans, challenging traditional network providers. The catch is that customers will need a Lidl Plus account to access these deals.
This move is part of a significant £600 million investment by the supermarket chain, which includes not only offering mobile services but also opening 50 new stores nationwide.
Following in the footsteps of other non-traditional telecom competitors like Revolut and Klarna, Lidl already provides similar services in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. There are potential plans to expand into the UK, US, France, and Spain, according to the Financial Times.
Lidl’s parent company, Schwarz Group, has struck a deal with 1GLOBAL communications provider to operate as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), allowing Lidl to offer mobile plans by utilizing existing infrastructure rather than building its own network.
In addition to its telecom venture, Lidl is expanding its retail presence by announcing the opening of over 50 new stores in the next year, generating 2,000 job opportunities. The supermarket chain currently operates more than 1,000 stores across Britain, employing over 35,000 workers.
The expansion is set to commence this summer, with Lidl targeting new properties across Great Britain. Ryan McDonnell, CEO of Lidl GB, expressed the company’s commitment to fostering regional growth and providing affordable, healthy food options to communities.
Schwarz Group will also acquire a 9.9% stake in 1GLOBAL as part of the agreement, aligning with its broader digital strategy. The group’s digital investments, including ventures in cloud computing, cybersecurity, and AI startups, signify its foray into the tech sector.
The move into additional markets by Lidl may pose a challenge to established telecom providers as new entrants offer competitive pricing and convenience. Employment minister Kate Dearden praised Lidl’s investment for creating thousands of jobs with fair wages, benefiting communities nationwide.
