Rachel Reeves, the Labour MP for Leeds West and Pudsey, has announced a significant financial commitment to modernize the UK’s railways. She criticized the Tories and Reform for allegedly planning to withdraw £45 billion from the North.
During a media briefing in Leeds, Reeves promised additional funding for Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR) in the upcoming spending review. She emphasized the importance of tangible improvements in travel experiences and local communities. Reeves accused the Tories of neglecting the North for over a decade.
Describing the transportation transformation as a personal mission, Reeves emphasized the need for substantial investment. She highlighted the necessity of funding to develop railways and execute infrastructure projects. Reeves stressed the government’s aim to foster economic growth nationwide, create quality employment opportunities, and elevate living standards for workers.
The initial phase of the railway plan includes enhancing connectivity on existing routes between Sheffield and Leeds, Leeds and York, and Leeds and Bradford. Subsequent phases will introduce a new route linking Liverpool and Manchester via Manchester airport and Warrington. The final phase will focus on strengthening connections from Manchester to Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield, and York.
In a direct criticism of Nigel Farage and Kemi Badenoch, Reeves suggested that both would let down the North. She contrasted their alleged failure to deliver with Labour’s commitment to investing in Northern Powerhouse Rail.
Reeves hinted at the possibility of further financial support during the spending review to accelerate the project’s timeline. She emphasized the importance of committing funds to ensure the benefits of the railway improvements are felt by the early 2030s.
