A former high-ranking Conservative member, who previously drew comparisons between Nigel Farage and Hitler’s chief propagandist, has been revealed as Reform’s most recent Conservative convert.

Nadhim Zahawi, a wealthy individual who faced dismissal from government due to failure in disclosing tax investigations, has expressed concerns about living in a country governed by Mr. Farage. The Conservative party claimed that Zahawi had sought a peerage from them multiple times but was denied. Following his defection, there have been suggestions that Reform is attracting disgraced former Conservative ministers.

The growing trend of Conservative members switching to Reform, which currently leads in the polls, has prompted allegations that Farage’s party is turning into a haven for ex-Conservative officials seeking political refuge.

TUC General Secretary, Paul Nowak, remarked that Zahawi’s defection to Reform was not surprising, given his wealthy background and tax controversies. Nowak emphasized that Reform aligns more with the interests of the affluent rather than the working class.

Zahawi, who received substantial earnings from his involvement with an oil company while serving as an MP, was ousted as Conservative chairman in 2023 for breaching ministerial code regarding tax issues. Despite settling with HMRC by paying a significant penalty, Zahawi’s parliamentary tenure was marked by controversies, including admitting to claiming expenses for heating stables at his estate.

In a previous estimation, Zahawi’s wealth was reported to be around £100 million, with past business ventures involving the marketing of Teletubbies merchandise.

A source from the Conservative party highlighted Zahawi’s repeated requests for a peerage, which were declined due to his tax-related dismissal. The source criticized Reform as a destination for disgraced politicians seeking redemption.

Both Zahawi and Farage have engaged in public spats over the years, with Zahawi once accusing Farage of promoting offensive and racist ideas. Despite their history of disagreements, Zahawi’s recent move to Reform has reignited tensions between the two figures.

Zahawi’s political journey, which saw him serve briefly as Chancellor under Boris Johnson, has been marred by controversies, including his handling of tax matters and expenses claims.

The transition of Zahawi, a former Conservative official, to Reform has stirred reactions from various political figures, with some labeling Reform as a sanctuary for discredited ex-Tory members. Zahawi’s association with both Liz Truss and Boris Johnson’s administrations has raised eyebrows within political circles.

As Zahawi navigates his new political affiliation, questions have been raised regarding Reform’s alignment with controversial figures, such as a scientist who made contentious statements about the Covid vaccine. Zahawi defended his stance on vaccine distribution, emphasizing the importance of national well-being.

The exchange underscores the growing polarization within the political landscape as former Conservative figures seek new platforms for their ideologies.
