Lindsey Vonn has issued a touching statement announcing her discharge from the hospital after a serious leg injury suffered during the Winter Olympics. “I had a complex tibia fracture, along with a fractured fibula head, and everything was fragmented, complicated by compartment syndrome,” Vonn shared in a video on Instagram. She explained that compartment syndrome occurs when excessive trauma leads to blood accumulation, causing severe damage to muscles, nerves, and tendons.
Dr. Tom Hackett played a crucial role in saving Vonn’s leg through a procedure called fasciotomy, where he made incisions on both sides of her leg to alleviate pressure and preserve her limb.
Expressing gratitude, Vonn mentioned that her prolonged hospital stay was due to low hemoglobin levels from multiple surgeries, necessitating a blood transfusion. Despite being wheelchair-bound due to a broken ankle, Vonn remains optimistic about her recovery, planning to transition to crutches in the coming weeks and engaging in extensive rehabilitation.
