Local elections in numerous English councils scheduled for May have been delayed, as confirmed by Local Government Secretary Steve Reed. A total of 29 councils will now hold their elections in 2027 instead. On May 7, voters were set to choose councillors in England, in addition to participating in elections for the Scottish and Welsh Parliaments.

The decision to postpone the elections came after over 350 representations were submitted to the Government expressing concerns about the potential disruptions caused by a proposed restructuring of local government. The restructuring aims to replace the current two-tier system with single-tier “unitary” authorities, consolidating the responsibilities of district and county councils.

Critics have accused the Government of disenfranchising millions of voters by calling off the elections. In response, Mr. Reed defended the decision, stating that the reforms would enhance the efficiency of local government services.

Among the councils where elections will not proceed on May 7 are those in Lincoln, Exeter, Norwich, Peterborough, and Preston, as well as districts like Cannock Chase, Harlow, Welwyn Hatfield, and West Lancashire.

Furthermore, the polling day for county council voters in East Sussex, West Sussex, Norfolk, and Suffolk has been postponed. Despite the delay, councillors’ terms will be extended, and elections will eventually take place in areas such as Essex County Council, Hampshire County Council, and Isle of Wight Council after a one-year deferral.

Mr. Reed addressed the situation, stating that most council elections would proceed as planned, with only a few exceptions following careful consideration of the reorganization impact in each area.

Darren Hughes, Chief Executive of the Electoral Reform Society, emphasized the importance of elections in upholding representative democracy and criticized the view that elections could impede council functions rather than providing elected officials with the necessary mandate to serve their constituents effectively.
