Samsung has introduced its latest series of innovative foldable smartphones, potentially posing a challenge for Apple. The tech giant from Korea has unveiled three new devices, led by the all-new Galaxy Z Fold 8, which features a revamped design.
Unlike its predecessors, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 showcases a unique “passport-style” design with a shorter, wider form factor. While it may appear unconventional when closed, the new shape offers a more practical layout when unfolded. The device boasts a spacious 7.6-inch display, resembling a compact tablet rather than a traditional smartphone, enhancing the user experience for activities like streaming, binge-watching, and gaming on the move.
This launch holds significant weight as Apple is anticipated to introduce its inaugural foldable iPhone later this year, with rumors hinting at a similar design approach. Samsung’s early adoption of this radical design could give it a competitive edge over its main rival.
In addition to the design overhaul, Samsung is leading the way in other aspects as well. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is the slimmest and lightest Fold yet, weighing just 180g. It boasts an enhanced hinge mechanism for improved durability and longevity, reducing the risk of damage over time.
Upon unfolding, the device’s larger display incorporates Vision Booster technology and an anti-reflective coating to enhance visibility, especially in bright sunlight. Powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor and a 4,800mAh battery, the phone offers fast charging capabilities, reaching 63% from empty in just half an hour.
The device features a dual-camera system for photography enthusiasts, reinforced with Gorilla Glass for added protection against scratches and accidental impacts. Samsung has integrated its latest Galaxy AI tools for enhanced photo editing, productivity features, and improved search functionalities.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is priced from £1,699 and is currently open for pre-orders, contrasting with Apple’s anticipated foldable iPhone launch later this year, expected to exceed £2,000 in price.
Besides the Fold 8, Samsung has also introduced the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, resembling the previous Fold 7 in design but packing a punch with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip and significant camera enhancements. The rear camera setup now boasts a 200MP main sensor, a 50MP ultra-wide lens, and a 10MP telephoto camera, promising superior low-light photography and 8K video recording capabilities.
The Fold 8 Ultra features the new Flex Titanium hinge and an upgraded display structure for increased durability and a refined appearance. Samsung claims to have reduced the notorious crease on the screen, coupled with a smoother and more natural unfolding mechanism.
Equipped with a larger 5,000mAh battery for extended usage, the device supports rapid charging, reaching 67% capacity in approximately 30 minutes. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra starts at £1,899.
Completing the lineup is the Galaxy Z Flip 8, maintaining the popular clamshell design from Samsung but now thinner and lighter than before. Improvements include an enhanced external cover display, a more robust aluminium hinge, enhanced performance, and upgraded camera features.
