After clinching a prestigious Golden Globe and an Emmy Award for her exceptional performance in the riveting Netflix series “Adolescence,” Erin Doherty is gradually acclimating to mingling with Hollywood’s elite. However, her post-Emmy Awards euphoria was swiftly dampened by a reality check from her mother.

During her appearance on the Graham Norton show, Erin, aged 33, shared the stage with esteemed personalities like Sir Idris Elba. It was on the BBC host’s show that she recounted being scolded by her mother for using profanity in her Emmy acceptance speech.

Fresh off a whirlwind trip to the United States, Erin informed viewers, “We literally landed, arrived on Tuesday, put it up on the bookshelf, and then watched TV. Yeah, it’s been enjoyable.” Her brief account elicited laughter from the audience.

Prompted by Graham, Erin revealed the incident with her mother, stating, “So essentially, after we returned post-Emmys due to the time difference, I FaceTimed my sister, and my mum was present, and we were all cheering.”

Known for her portrayal of Princess Anne in “The Crown,” the actress added, “But she interjected and said, ‘Can I just say,’ very seriously, ‘I could have done without the swearing.'” Erin recounted, “I was puzzled, holding the trophy, I said, ‘Mum, this is a big deal.’ And she responded, ‘Yeah, great, well done, but could have done without the swearing.'”

Expressing regret, Erin admitted to Graham and the audience, “I didn’t mean to, well, I didn’t intend to.” At that moment, Idris inquired about the swear word she used on stage, surrounded by numerous A-list Hollywood figures. Erin remembered, “I think I just called everyone f*****g stunning or something like that.”

She went on, “I saw Cate Blanchett right there and said, ‘she’s f*****g stunning.’ I had a conversation with my mum, and she warned me not to swear if I ever took the stage again, to which I promised her I wouldn’t.” Erin’s career skyrocketed due to her compelling performances, and reports suggest she is also focusing on advancing her relationship with her girlfriend, Sinead Donnelly, a radiographer for the NHS.

Formerly residing in West Sussex, Erin has reportedly relocated to London to spend quality time with her partner. At the Critics’ Choice Awards, where she secured the Best Actress accolade, Erin explained her decision, stating, “As much as I loved traveling to see her and spending days in London, I also wanted to wake up next to her.” She expressed, “I’m quite the romantic. Moving in right away might sound like a cliché lesbian move, but I genuinely felt it was the right decision. I adore her.”

The pair were spotted at Wimbledon last summer, and Erin’s revelation follows her split from ex-girlfriend Sophie Melville. Despite their breakup, Erin regarded their relationship as one of her proudest achievements on the How To Fail podcast.

In a 2022 interview with Porter magazine, Erin credited Sophie with influencing her lifestyle positively, stating, “I used to sit at home eating a bag of chocolates, and now we have, like, a kale salad.” The couple first crossed paths in 2017 while performing together in Alan Ayckbourn’s play “The Divide.”
