In preparation for its Olympic premiere, flag football is set to make a debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. Canada is among the nations vying for the initial spots at the upcoming world championships in Germany this week.
The men’s and women’s Olympic tournaments each consist of six teams, with two spots available for grabs. The United States, a dominant force in flag football, secures an automatic entry as the host, leaving the remaining three spots per gender to be determined through a two-stage qualifier starting in Montreal in June 2028.
Although the world championships do not determine Olympic qualification directly, securing a spot early would alleviate the pressure of competing in the last-chance qualifier for the next two years.
In the tournament in Germany, sixteen teams compete in both men’s and women’s divisions, divided into groups of four for the preliminary matches held on Thursday and Friday. The top two teams from each group advance to the knockout stage commencing on Saturday, culminating in the medal games on Sunday to determine the world champions and the Olympic qualifiers.
The top two finishers in each tournament secure a ticket to the Olympics. However, if the United States reaches the final, a third-place finish would suffice, potentially leading to intense bronze-medal matchups.
The Canadian women’s team begins their group stage matches with Panama followed by Brazil, and then Japan. The Canadian men’s team faces Austria in their opener, with matches against Japan and a default win against Nigeria, who withdrew due to visa issues.
In the global rankings, the Canadian women’s team holds the fourth position, trailing Mexico, the United States, and Great Britain. The team has claimed world championship titles in 2010 and 2014, with a bronze in 2018. The men’s team, ranked tenth, secured their lone world title in 2008 and aim to improve upon past bronze finishes.
As flag football debuts at the 2028 Olympics, there were speculations about NFL and CFL stars joining the teams. However, the physical demands and strategies of flag football differ significantly from tackle football, as evident from past exhibition matches where flag football players showcased their agility and tactical prowess against NFL stars.
Canada’s national teams feature former NFL and CFL players, emphasizing the importance of strategic adaptability in flag football. The championships can be watched live on CBC Gem and the CBC Sports website, providing fans with an opportunity to witness the thrilling competition unfold.
