The Toronto Blue Jays are set to honor veteran announcer Buck Martinez by inducting him into the team’s newly established Hall of Excellence at Rogers Centre this Saturday. Martinez, who recently ended his broadcasting career after covering over 4,000 games, has dedicated almost forty years to the Blue Jays as a player, manager, and broadcaster.

Expressing his gratitude, Martinez acknowledged the fans for their warm reception and treating him like family over the years. Known for his signature catchphrases like “a swing and a drive” and “get outta here ball,” Martinez’s distinctive broadcasting style, coupled with his notable American accent, has left a lasting impact on Blue Jays’ followers.

Reflecting on his broadcasting journey, Martinez shared that phrases like “get up, get up, get up, get out of here” were inspired by his playing days and his time in Milwaukee. Despite the initial doubts upon joining the Blue Jays in 1981, Martinez came to cherish Toronto’s baseball culture and the profound support from fans, transforming his view from feeling “exiled” to finding a cherished destination.

While lamenting the struggles faced by first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and the team’s rough season, Martinez emphasized the challenges in the game, even for top-tier players. The Hall of Excellence, located on the 100 Level concourse behind right field, will feature an exhibit honoring key figures who have influenced the franchise, including current members like Jose Bautista, Joe Carter, and Roy Halladay.

Martinez, who had hoped to participate in the Jays’ 50th season celebrations, had to step back due to health issues, having battled cancer for the second time in 2025 (initially diagnosed in 2022). However, he joyfully shared that he is now cancer-free and in good health. The Hall of Excellence aims to pay tribute to individuals who have left a lasting legacy on the Blue Jays organization, with Martinez standing as a prominent figure in the team’s history.
