The International Swimming League (ISL) is set to make a comeback after a five-year break with an All-Star Match scheduled at the London Aquatics Centre on December 19, as announced by the league recently. This event, featuring top swimmers from around the world, will offer a substantial prize fund, with specific details to be revealed later. Notable swimmers who have participated in previous ISL events include Caeleb Dressel from the United States, Adam Peaty from Britain, and Katinka Hosszu from Hungary.
The decision to host this event aligns with the ISL Commissioner Ben Allen’s previous statements about the league’s intention to relaunch in 2026 with a new business model focused on diversifying revenue streams through sponsorships and media partnerships. The ISL was established in 2019 to provide a professional swimming competition outside the Olympic cycle and last held a season in 2021 before facing disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical issues affecting its main supporter, Konstantin Grigorishin.
In a bid to revitalize its operations, the ISL aims to stage a comeback season with seven matches spanning North America, Europe, Asia, and possibly the Middle East, exploring a condensed one-day competition format. In a positive move, the league also committed to paying overdue prize money to approximately 300 athletes from the 2021 season earlier this year.
The upcoming All-Star Match in London is seen as a test run for the league’s revised approach, emphasizing a more compact and dynamic format to engage audiences. Commissioner Allen expressed enthusiasm for the event, highlighting London’s status as an ideal host city with a renowned sporting culture and a world-class venue in the Aquatics Centre, known for hosting prestigious swimming competitions.
Further details about the participating swimmers, match format, ticket sales, and broadcasting arrangements for the London event will be disclosed by the ISL in due course.
