NHL prospect Matthew Mayich, originally from Hamilton and a former player for the Ottawa 67’s, is currently hospitalized in Arizona due to an incident during off-ice training, as confirmed by the Ontario Hockey League. The OHL has expressed its support and well wishes for the 21-year-old Mayich.
Matthew Mayich, a defenseman, was selected by the St. Louis Blues in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL draft. His player profile indicates that he played youth hockey with the Hamilton Huskies from 2016 to 2020 before joining the 67’s. The OHL mentioned that Mayich was admitted to the hospital while preparing for the upcoming 2026-27 season in Arizona on August 20.
St. Louis Blues have expressed their prayers for Mayich’s recovery. Arizona State University, where Mayich is listed as a player, confirmed that a student on the hockey team collapsed during a morning outdoor exercise session and is currently hospitalized. The university refrained from disclosing the student’s identity and stated that they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Doug Armstrong, the President of Hockey Operations for the Blues, released a statement saying, “The entire Blues organization is keeping Matthew Mayich close to our hearts as we pray for his comfort and recovery while he continues to undergo medical treatment in Arizona.” The organization has extended its full support to Mayich’s family, friends, and teammates during this challenging period.
OHL commissioner Bryan Crawford echoed similar sentiments, expressing solidarity with Matthew, his parents, and his entire family. Crawford stated, “Our thoughts are with Matthew, his parents John and Christina, and the entire Mayich family.”
The Hamilton Steel Hockey Club, formerly known as the Huskies, conveyed their congratulations to Mayich back in 2021 when he signed with the ’67s and again in 2023 when he was drafted by the Blues. The Huskies noted that Mayich had been part of their organization since he was nine years old.
