Venezuela’s opposition leader Maria Corina Machado ended her silence on Thursday by releasing a video statement, rejecting the recent oil deal signed in Caracas between the U.S. government and Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodriguez. In her address, Machado empathized with her fellow citizens, expressing sorrow and frustration over decisions being made without their consent.

This statement from Machado followed a day where both U.S. President Trump and Rodriguez failed to provide a timeline for the return to democracy in Venezuela. Trump’s support for the current government led by Rodriguez was reiterated, despite her lack of electoral legitimacy for the position.

Machado highlighted the need for democratic processes and rule of law before such significant deals are made, emphasizing the lack of transparency and clarity surrounding the terms of the agreement. Many Venezuelans, including industry experts, expressed discontent and skepticism towards the deal, questioning its implications on the country’s future.

The deal, which involves rejuvenating 17 Venezuelan oilfields and extracting 65 billion barrels of oil, raised concerns among Venezuelan Canadians, with some condemning the prioritization of oil over addressing political prisoners’ plight. The involvement of U.S. and Venezuelan entities in the deal has sparked controversy and suspicions of ulterior motives.

Critics of the agreement fear potential exploitation of Venezuela’s resources and the entrenchment of the current regime, raising alarms about the risk of prolonged foreign intervention and loss of sovereignty. The deal’s reception in Venezuela and concerns about its long-term viability among oil companies suggest a complex and uncertain path ahead for the country’s oil industry.

Amidst growing unease and criticism, the focus remains on the potential consequences of the deal on Venezuela’s autonomy and political landscape. The fear of continued authoritarian rule and foreign influence looms large, challenging the principles of democracy and sovereignty in the region.
