Prime Minister Mark Carney has rejected recent remarks made by U.S. cabinet members challenging the Canadian government’s reasons for withdrawing from trade discussions. He remarked that appointed U.S. officials are not well-versed in Canadian politics. Carney, along with chief trade negotiator Janice Charette, maintained that Canada exited talks due to unfair and economically unsound last-minute changes introduced by the U.S. These changes would have limited Canada’s trade agreement flexibility, weakened cultural protections for the French language, and negatively impacted the auto industry.

Carney highlighted the U.S.’s inflexible stance during negotiations, emphasizing their sudden disregard for Canadian language and culture as contradictory. He stressed the importance of Canada’s red lines being acknowledged and respected by the U.S. for any future negotiations to occur. Carney emphasized the need for a durable deal beneficial to both nations, ensuring that any previous tariff reductions remain in place without sudden reimposition.

In response to the Trump administration’s disparaging comments and social media provocations towards Canada post-talks breakdown, Carney dismissed the insults as unbecoming of senior U.S. officials. He stressed the integrated nature of the auto industry spanning the border and the necessity for a competitive agreement benefiting Canada. Carney reiterated Canada’s commitment to protecting and promoting the French language, Canadian culture, and the ability to engage in trade agreements with other countries.
