Researchers from Alberta are reaching out to residents of Prince Edward Island to discuss the experiences of transgender adults accessing gender-affirming care. Sandra Thoms and Nicholas Wallace, social work students from the University of Calgary, are conducting a study in Atlantic Canada that encompasses insights from both the transgender community and healthcare providers.

Wallace emphasized the lack of comprehensive research on transgender individuals seeking healthcare, particularly in the context of Atlantic Canada. Gender-affirming care, as defined by the World Health Organization, encompasses various interventions – social, psychological, behavioral, or medical – that validate and support an individual’s gender identity.

AinZ Kendrick, the executive director of the P.E.I. Transgender Network, highlighted the broad spectrum of gender-affirming care beyond medical transitions, emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach to care. Thoms stressed that basic respect, such as using the correct name and pronouns, is fundamental to affirming healthcare practices.

The research duo noted a lower participation rate from Prince Edward Island compared to other provinces in the study. Kendrick attributed this to lingering stigma and fear within the transgender community but suggested fostering relationships with existing organizations to improve engagement.

Despite P.E.I.’s progressive gender-affirming care policies, barriers persist, as Kendrick pointed out disparities in access to services like mastectomies. Thoms and Wallace aim to shed light on challenges faced by transgender individuals within the healthcare system while also showcasing positive experiences. Their ultimate goal is to deliver impactful findings back to the communities they engaged with to drive positive change.

By sharing the stories and experiences of participants, the researchers hope to advocate for improved care practices and address existing gaps in transgender healthcare services.
