Quebec officials are expressing shock following the tragic passing of a four-year-old boy in the Nunavik village of Ivujivik amid allegations that the child was refused medical care.
In a press release issued on Thursday, Québec Solidaire representative Sol Zanetti demanded clarity regarding the demise of Jusi Padlayat, who reportedly passed away on August 3 after his parents took him to the local clinic multiple times for stomach discomfort without receiving treatment.
According to an interview with La Presse, Padlayat’s grandmother, Annie Mangiuk, stated that medical staff dismissed the family’s concerns and recommended administering Advil or Tylenol to the boy. Mangiuk recounted that Padlayat was discovered unconscious on August 1, later transferred to the local nursing station, and subsequently moved to the Montreal Children’s Hospital where he eventually succumbed.
Zanetti condemned the prolonged suffering of a child as unacceptable and highlighted potential neglect issues, urging a thorough investigation into the matter, including any possible systemic racism within healthcare services.
The Quebec Liberal Party (QLP) also called for enhancements to healthcare services in northern regions, proposing increased telemedicine options as a viable solution. Sandrine Rioux, the QLP candidate in Ungava encompassing Ivujivik, emphasized that individuals in Ungava should not face uncertainties regarding access to essential care due to their geographical location.
The tragic incident prompted the Joyce’s Principle Office to stress the importance of respecting dignity through active listening and tangible actions, particularly in services catering to First Nations and Inuit communities. Sylvestre Desterres, interim executive director of the Joyce’s Principle Office, emphasized the need to prevent families from enduring similar distressing situations.
Both the Inuulitsivik Health Centre and the Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services have committed to conducting internal and external investigations into the incident, while Quebec’s coroners office confirmed an ongoing inquiry without disclosing specific details. The Montreal Children’s Hospital refrained from commenting on individual cases.
