Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office has confirmed that he will deliver a speech to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France next month. During his visit, Carney will engage with members of the European Parliament to enhance the ties between Canada and the European Union for the mutual benefit of their citizens.

Prior to his speech, the prime minister will also participate in the State of the European Union address, a significant annual event delivered by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, which holds considerable political importance in Europe.

Carney’s efforts to strengthen relations with Europe come in the context of Canada’s trade tensions with the United States. Following the breakdown of Ottawa-Washington trade negotiations over the weekend, Carney’s visit serves as a strategic move to foster closer connections with the European Union.

In the past year, Canada has entered into multiple partnership agreements with the EU and gained membership in Security Action for Europe, a program offering €150 billion in defense-related loans, making Canada the first non-European participant.

A spokesperson from the European Commission emphasized the significance of Carney’s visit as a symbol of the strong bond between Canada and the EU. The spokesperson highlighted that the visit aims to underscore both sides’ commitment to elevating their partnership, especially crucial amidst the current global challenges.

While the European Commission views Carney’s visit as an important step towards reinforcing international relationships, Conservative deputy leader Melissa Lantsman expressed reservations, suggesting that Carney should prioritize recalling Parliament before traveling abroad to address another legislative body.
