In a lengthy virtual meeting, the board decided to include Trump’s name on the building’s facade, changing it to “The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Restored and Renovated By President Donald J. Trump.” Additionally, the plaza in front of the building would be dedicated to Trump, with a plan to close most of the venue for two years to facilitate extensive renovations.
Representative Joyce Beatty, a Democrat from Ohio and ex-officio board member, along with her legal team, described these changes as a significant challenge to U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper. Cooper had previously ruled in May that letters displaying Trump’s name on the building were unlawfully added and ordered their removal, a decision the Trump administration unsuccessfully tried to appeal. Cooper also blocked the planned two-year closure, criticizing the board’s decision as lacking proper information and appearing predetermined.
Beatty condemned the latest developments as an attempt to circumvent the court’s ruling and violate congressional statutes. The Kennedy Center did not immediately respond to requests for comments on the matter. The board meeting primarily focused on the necessary closures for safety-related renovations, with the management presenting three closure options for consideration.
The board ultimately decided on a complete two-year closure while potentially allowing some programming in an outdoor space known as the Reach. This decision, along with the efforts to memorialize Trump, raised questions about the board’s thorough consideration of all available options.
Under Trump’s leadership during his second term, the Kennedy Center has become a symbol of presidential authority, with Trump swiftly making changes upon his return to office in 2025. His actions include removing and reinstating his name on the building, which was later taken down following the court order.
