A massive landslide has devastated parts of New Zealand, leading to several people missing and at least two fatalities. The chaos of the landslide resulted in caravans, tents, and vehicles being flattened on the island.

Six individuals are still unaccounted for, and authorities are requesting information on three others, including two teenagers, with the youngest being 15 years old. The landslide occurred suddenly following unprecedented rainfall over the past few days, transforming parts of the east coast into what emergency management minister Mark Mitchell described as a “war zone.”

Emergency services are working diligently to rescue those trapped under debris. The situation has prompted local states of emergency in five regions in Northland and the East Cape. The landslide struck Welcome Bay on the North Island of New Zealand early in the morning.

Shortly after, emergency services responded to a second landslide at Mount Maunganui Beachside Holiday Park on the North Island, where multiple children are still missing. Eyewitnesses described a scene of chaos and horror as holidaymakers fled the campground, with some individuals attempting to rescue those trapped under debris.

Dramatic footage from the Beachside Holiday Park shows the evacuation of the area, as rescue teams conduct a frantic search for any survivors. Despite efforts, rescue workers have not detected any signs of life at the campsite. Authorities have confirmed that at least one young girl is among those missing.

Eyewitnesses near the campsite recounted the terrifying experience of witnessing the landslide and the ensuing chaos. People at the scene described the landslide as sudden and swift, with structures collapsing in a matter of seconds.

One individual, hailed as a hero, warned fellow campers of the impending landslide just before becoming trapped in the rubble herself. She frantically alerted others and tried to ensure their safety before the disaster struck, ultimately finding herself stuck along with several others when the landslide engulfed the area.
