Leading sports organizations, including the Premier League, are joining forces to enhance men’s mental health awareness. A new initiative spearheaded by the Government is launching a week-long campaign called Team Up, scheduled to take place from January 26 to February 1, 2026, across the UK. The primary goal of this campaign is to address the male loneliness crisis, promote social connections, and emphasize support for men’s mental well-being.
Recent data reveals that in England, one out of every four boys and young men between the ages of 11 and 16 experience feelings of loneliness at various frequencies. Alarmingly, suicide remains a significant cause of death among men under 50 years old.
Ministers express deep concerns regarding the lack of positive social environments, which could leave young men susceptible to isolation, mental health issues, and negative online influences. Notable organizations such as the Premier League, EFL, Rugby Football Union, England & Wales Cricket Board, and Movember are expected to endorse this crucial campaign. Ahead of the campaign kickoff, the Government is urging elite clubs, grassroots teams, professional athletes, amateurs, and supporters to actively participate.
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy stated, “A concerning number of boys and young men in the country are facing challenges in seeking help and support due to limited accessible resources and proper guidance.” She emphasized the negative impact of online platforms that reinforce harmful stereotypes about masculinity, leading to severe consequences.
Nandy highlighted the positive influence of sports in addressing these issues, citing its ability to foster real-life connections, camaraderie, confidence, and self-assurance among young men. The ‘Team Up’ campaign aims to convey the message that everyone deserves a supportive team to navigate life’s obstacles.
To further support youth well-being, the Government is investing £500 million in the National Youth Strategy to establish up to 250 new or renovated youth facilities. Tracy Herd, Director of Men’s Health (Europe) at Movember, expressed enthusiasm in supporting Team Up Week, emphasizing the role of physical activity in enhancing young men’s mental health.
