The TV licence fee is set to increase in April, going up from £174.50 to £180 per year. It is mandatory to have a TV licence to watch live TV, record shows, or access any content on BBC iPlayer. However, if you only stream shows on platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, ITVX, Disney Plus, YouTube, All 4, or My5, a TV licence is not required.

Watching live shows on these streaming services will necessitate a TV licence. Failure to have a TV licence while viewing programmes that demand one could result in a fine of up to £1,000. You can declare your exemption from needing a TV licence on the TV Licensing website.

The Department for Culture, Media, and Sport has affirmed its commitment to the TV licence fee for the current charter period. Additionally, there are provisions for manageable payment plans to assist the public in spreading out their payments. Free TV licences are available for individuals over 75 who receive pension credit, with reduced fees applicable for care home residents and visually impaired persons.

Certain groups, including those over 75 on Pension Credit, students living away from home, individuals with severe sight impairments, and residents of care or sheltered accommodation, may qualify for free or discounted TV licences.
