Iran’s regime, although weakened, continues to exhibit brutality and repression following a severe crackdown on protests nationwide, as stated by the former head of MI6. Sir Richard Moore highlighted the widespread nature of the protests in Tehran, involving people from various backgrounds and driven initially by economic grievances due to the regime’s failures in that area.

Despite the regime’s weakened state, attributed to incompetence, economic mismanagement, and international setbacks, its capacity for cruelty remains unchanged. US President Donald Trump mentioned Iran’s interest in negotiation after recent events but did not rule out potential actions in response to the situation.

Regarding US involvement, Sir Richard emphasized the importance of Iranians determining their own future and cautioned that any support for the protestors should be carefully managed to avoid adverse consequences. Calls have emerged for the UK to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization, a move that, while symbolically significant, may not have a practical impact on the IRGC’s activities.

UK officials have indicated limitations in using sanctions and domestic legislation against Iran, with a focus on exploring international pressure mechanisms. Efforts are underway to collaborate with global partners to address the situation in Iran effectively.
