Renowned BBC commentator John Hunt voiced his dissatisfaction with the camera work of the host broadcaster, which resulted in viewers missing the crucial beginning of Matt Weston’s gold-winning mixed team skeleton run. Weston, competing with Tabitha Stoecker, triumphed over two German teams to secure Britain’s second gold medal of the day. However, many tuning in to witness the historic moment were left frustrated.

As Weston was about to start his run, the camera unexpectedly shifted focus away from him towards the Team GB official giving the signal. This move deprived viewers of witnessing the start of the significant sporting event.

Criticism of the camerawork was widespread, with Hunt expressing his dismay by exclaiming, “Oh, what are they doing, what are they playing at; that’s terrible!” He later apologized and tried to compose himself for the rest of the run, acknowledging the mishap with the visuals but reassuring viewers that Weston was on his way.

Weston, who secured Team GB’s first medal at the Games with a gold on Friday, became the first British athlete to win two gold medals at a Winter Olympics. Stoecker initially trailed the Germans by 0.30 seconds, with the British team running last in the final.

In an impressive 58.59-second run, Weston clinched his second victory of the Games. This success followed a remarkable day where Charlotte Bankes and Huw Nightingale also claimed gold in the snowboard cross mixed team event.

Despite the celebration, fans missed a crucial moment of Weston’s victorious run as the live camera inexplicably cut away at a pivotal instant. The elated 28-year-old shared his feelings about the win, stating to the BBC, “Luckily, I felt like I kind of knew what I needed to do. Yesterday – not yesterday, the day before, it’s all a bit of a whirlwind, when I had the individual event, I kind of took a load of confidence from that, and I just had to, almost in my head, be boring and get the job done. We’ve done it again!”

Stoecker, emotional during their joint interview, expressed gratitude towards Weston, emphasizing the team effort that led to their success. This achievement propelled Great Britain to 12th place in the medal tally, with all three medals being gold within a span of three days.

The Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games, running from February 6-22, offer fans over 850 hours of live action on discovery+ via Prime Video. Throughout the event, the £3.99 discovery+ Entertainment subscription grants access to TNT Sports 2, the hub for continuous Olympic coverage.
