The son of a British couple detained in Iran expressed concerns for their safety following the closure of the UK embassy in Tehran amidst widespread anti-regime protests.
Craig and Lindsay Foreman, who were on a global motorbike journey, were arrested in January 2025 by Iranian authorities on spying charges. Despite denying the allegations, they remain imprisoned in Iran amid the ongoing mass protests that have led to arrests, violence, and executions.
Their son, Joe Bennett, disclosed that the prisons in Iran were facing overcrowding due to the high number of arrests during the protests. He mentioned that his parents described the jail conditions as unsafe and frightening, with reports of vermin in the kitchen and overcrowding exacerbated by the demonstrations.
With the temporary closure of the UK embassy in Tehran, Joe expressed his concerns about the challenges in advocating for his parents’ release. Legal representatives for Craig and Lindsay have submitted a bail application in Tehran as part of efforts to secure their freedom.
Joe highlighted the impact of the embassy closure on his parents’ planned route to seek safety, emphasizing the uncertainty caused by the current situation. He also mentioned their deteriorating health conditions in prison, including Lindsay’s skin issues and Craig’s weight loss and dental problems.
Efforts to address the situation are ongoing, with the Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office assessing the circumstances. The Mirror has reached out to the office for further comments on the matter.
