Canada’s Victor Lai secured the men’s singles bronze medal at the badminton world championships once again. The 21-year-old athlete, hailing from Markham, Ontario, and seeded seventh, faced a defeat in the semifinals against French player Alex Lanier, the European champion, in a closely contested match at the Indira Gandhi Arena in New Delhi. In this tournament, both semifinalists who do not progress to the final are awarded bronze medals.
Victor Lai made history for Canada last year by earning their inaugural medal at a badminton world championship after defeating the 2021 world champion Loh Kean Yew of Singapore in the quarterfinals in Paris. This year, he continued his impressive performance by overcoming Loh in the round of 16 and then securing victory against Rasmus Gemke from Denmark in the quarterfinals, earning him his second world championship medal.
Lai’s remarkable achievements have seen him rise from the 50th position to seventh in the world rankings over the past year.
