Special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner from the United States engaged in positive discussions during their inaugural official visit to Ukraine, aiming to halt Russia’s prolonged invasion. This visit followed a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, where both sides intensified their aerial assaults. The U.S. government, previously preoccupied with the Iran conflict, renewed efforts to resolve the ongoing warfare in Ukraine.

Russia has recently employed rapid jet-powered drones, leading to frequent air-raid sirens and minimal advancements for troops along the 1,250-kilometer front line in Kyiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed a desire for a just and lasting peace, preventing any future aggression against Ukraine. He welcomed the American delegates, who traveled by train, for their maiden visit to Ukraine and announced upcoming talks involving national security advisers from Britain, France, and Germany.

Witkoff described the discussions as substantial and encouraging, reflecting on the importance, as perceived by U.S. President Donald Trump, of not only ending the current conflict but also establishing conditions for sustainable peace. The discussions, as per a senior Ukrainian official, primarily focused on navigating through the upcoming winter and implementing necessary measures.

In Moscow, the meeting between U.S. officials and Putin concluded without significant breakthroughs announced, with discussions extending beyond the Ukraine conflict to include economic cooperation and joint projects. This recent visit marked the return of Witkoff and Kushner, including their previous talks with Putin in January at the Kremlin.

Despite an agreement between Putin and Zelenskyy to halt strikes on each other’s capitals during negotiations, skirmishes persisted, resulting in casualties on both sides. The exchange of fire led to casualties in various regions, with multiple drone attacks causing casualties and damage. Both countries reported intercepting and downing a significant number of drones and missiles launched during the conflict.

On the ground in Kyiv, a moment of silence was observed to honor fallen soldiers, with attendees expressing mixed sentiments regarding the potential outcomes of the ongoing talks. While some, like Nataliia Lipei, remained hopeful for a peaceful resolution, others, like Oleksandr Pastukhov, were skeptical about the efficacy of diplomatic efforts. Pope Leo also reiterated his call for peace in Ukraine and expressed hope for successful negotiations to bring about a diplomatic resolution.
