Ukrainian authorities investigating officials in President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s office were revealed by anti-corruption agencies on Wednesday. The probe is targeting a criminal organization allegedly led by a current and former lawmaker, which reportedly involves high-ranking officials from the presidential office. The National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office are jointly conducting the investigation. President Zelenskyy has not publicly commented on the investigation but has removed Iryna Mudra from her position as deputy head of the president’s office through a decree. This investigation poses a new challenge to Zelenskyy’s political leadership, following previous incidents such as the resignation of his chief of staff Andriy Yermak, who was later implicated in a major corruption investigation.
In response to recent events, Ukraine’s parliament approved the appointment of Yevhenii Khmara as the new Defense Minister. Zelenskyy nominated Khmara, who had been serving as the acting minister, following the dismissal of Mykhailo Fedorov in July. The appointment received support from 312 lawmakers, surpassing the required majority of 226 votes.
Former Defense Minister Fedorov has called for national elections in Ukraine in a bold move that seems to challenge Zelenskyy’s stance. Fedorov emphasized the need for a democratic process to address the systemic governance crisis facing Ukraine. Zelenskyy’s office has yet to respond to Fedorov’s remarks.
