UK smartphone users are being warned about a new text message scam circulating that targets unsuspecting individuals. This scam, known as the “Hi Mum” scam, has already resulted in significant financial losses for victims.

The fraudulent messages start with a seemingly innocent text supposedly from a family member using a different phone number. The scammers leverage current seasonal conditions, like the summer weather, to give the message a sense of urgency and relevance.

Typical messages include phrases such as “Hi Mum, I’m feeling overheated and stressed. Please contact me on my new number – it’s urgent.” Upon receiving a response, the fraudsters impersonate a family member in distress and eventually request money transfer, often under the guise of an emergency.

Report Fraud highlights the effectiveness of these scams, exploiting parents’ natural inclination to assist their children. The messages are crafted to instill panic and prompt quick actions without allowing time for verification.

If you receive such a message, refrain from replying. Instead, reach out to your family member using their known phone number to confirm their safety. Report the suspicious text promptly to prevent further harm.

In case of a suspicious message:

– Avoid responding directly.
– Verify the sender’s identity by contacting them through their usual phone number.
– Forward the suspicious text to 7726, the UK’s spam reporting service.

Although these scams may appear obvious in hindsight, they have duped many victims, especially individuals less familiar with technology. The emotional manipulation in the messages often constructs a plausible narrative that coerces victims into transferring money without validation.

The financial impact of these scams is substantial, with Action Fraud reporting over £220,000 lost to “Hi Mum” scams in the UK between 2023 and 2025. It is essential to approach unexpected messages claiming to be from family members cautiously. Always authenticate the sender’s identity through a trusted communication method before taking any action.
